FAQ

Questions, answered.

How Citeroot works, what it measures and what it doesn't claim. Can't find yours? Ask us.

The basics

What is Citeroot?

Citeroot asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, stores every answer with its sources, measures whether your brand is mentioned, cited and recommended, and checks your site for the issues that keep it out of answers. It can also draft briefs from your own gap data.

Is Citeroot just an AI visibility tracker?

Tracking is the core. Alongside it there is Source Map (which domains answers cite, and the gaps against competitors), Site Audit (AI-crawler access and answer-readiness checks) and a beta of briefs and insights. Several other modules, such as analytics and search-data integrations, are planned but not built; they are labelled “Coming soon” on the platform page.

Who is Citeroot for?

Marketing, SEO, content and communications people at brands and agencies who want to understand and improve how they appear in AI-generated answers. It is one login per account today; shared team workspaces are not built yet.

What's the difference between GEO, AEO and AI visibility?

GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) describe the work of improving how you appear in AI answers. AI visibility is what you observe: your presence across a defined set of answers. Our glossary and guides go into detail.

Data & methodology

Which AI engines do you track?

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Each answer is a real API call to the provider with web search switched on. How many engines you can use depends on your plan: 1 on Scout, 2 on Trail, all four on Summit. Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI and Grok are not supported.

Are the answers the same as what people see in the consumer apps?

Close, but not identical. We use the providers' APIs, which are not personalised to a logged-in person and have no chat memory, and location is only approximated through a country setting. The consumer apps also change independently of the APIs. So Citeroot is a consistent measuring instrument, not a record of what one specific person saw, and we never present it as that.

How accurate and consistent are the answers?

AI answers vary from run to run, so Citeroot reports every rate with a 95% Wilson confidence interval and labels changes that fall inside it as “within normal variation”. With fewer than five answers it says “not enough data yet” rather than show a percentage. Mentions are detected by matching your brand names and domain in the answer text; “recommended” is a heuristic based on sentence cues, and the sentence is shown so you can disagree with it.

What is the difference between a mention, a citation and a recommendation?

A mention is your brand named in an answer. A citation is a link to a page on your domain (other sources are tracked in Source Map). A recommendation is an explicit suggestion for the use case in the prompt, detected from sentence cues. They are reported separately, each with its own denominator.

Can I track other countries or languages?

Each project has a country and a language, which are passed to the engines as a hint. A hint is not a guarantee of what someone in that country would see, and per-market personalisation is not supported.

Can Citeroot prove that a change caused a visibility gain?

No tool honestly can. Citeroot keeps measurements comparable and records what you collected and when, so your team can weigh the evidence instead of trusting a guess.

Using the product

Does Citeroot change my website or publish content?

Never. Briefs and insights are drafts for your team to review. Publishing and site changes stay with you.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The free tools and single-page checks work from a domain or URL. For a multi-page Site Audit you prove you own the domain with a DNS TXT record, a verification file or a meta tag; nothing else is added to your site.

How quickly will I see results?

Results appear in the app as each answer comes back, so you can start reading while a run finishes. Whether AI answers change after you change your site is another matter, and we won't promise a timeline we can't back up.

Can I export my data?

Paid plans can export collected answers as CSV. Any account can download its data as JSON from Settings.

Is there an API, MCP server or integrations?

Not yet. The REST API, webhooks, MCP server and integrations such as Search Console, GA4, Slack and Looker Studio are planned. You can join a waitlist on each module's page and we will email you once when it ships.

Can my team share one account?

Not yet. Each account has one login, and team seats are not built. Summit includes five projects, which agencies can use for several brands.

Pricing & billing

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Scout is free forever and includes 1 project, 10 active prompts, 1 engine, 60 collected answers a month (about weekly runs) and a Site Audit of up to 25 pages.

Do you offer a free trial?

Yes. Trail and Summit include a 14-day free trial that starts when you sign up for it. No credit card is required.

What happens when my trial ends?

Your account drops to the free Scout plan. Nothing is deleted and nothing is charged. If you subscribed during the trial, the remaining trial days were honoured before the first charge.

Can I cancel?

Any time, in the Stripe customer portal, linked from Billing in the app. Access continues until the end of the period you have paid for. See the cancellation policy for details.

Do you offer invoices and purchase orders?

Stripe sends a receipt for each payment and invoices are available in the customer portal. If you need purchase orders or a custom contract, talk to us about Expedition.

Security & privacy

How is my data protected?

Passwords are hashed with scrypt, sessions use httpOnly cookies, traffic is encrypted in transit, every query is scoped to your account, and our crawlers have protections against server-side request forgery. The security page lists these plainly, along with what we do not claim.

What do you send to AI providers?

Only your prompts and the brand and competitor names needed to ask and analyse them, to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity. We store the answers that come back. We do not send your account details or password.

Do you train models on my data?

No. Citeroot does not train models on your data. Prompts you send go to the AI providers through their commercial APIs, whose own terms govern how they handle that input; the subprocessors page lists them.

Can I delete my data?

Yes. Deleting your account from Settings removes your account and everything in it: projects, prompts, answers and audits. You can download your data as JSON first.

Are you SOC 2 / ISO 27001 certified?

No. We hold neither certification and we do not claim either. We would rather tell you what we actually do than imply a standard we have not been audited against.
